  1. Call to Order by President Thompson-Introduction of Members/Guests

9:22 a.m.  Thompson gave a nice speech honoring Tom Trice, a former National APWA President, who will be retiring.  National President, Mary Joyce played a PowerPoint presentation and honored Tom with a resolution.  Tom Trice thanked everyone, was humbled by the praise, and impressed on the well-researched history.

  1. Approve Meeting Minutes September 24, 2020

It was moved by Skylis and seconded by Belair to approve the September 24, 2020 meeting minutes.  All were in favor.

  1. Branch Reports
    1. Central

No report

  1. Detroit Metro

Currently there is not much to report, but they have not decided if they will have the Holiday party, but probably not.  There will be a webinar on Wastewater in December.

  1. Downriver

The Administrative Assistant Day luncheon is today.  The scholarship candidates have been selected and will possibly be presented during the December meeting.  It was suggested that we look for ways to speed up the payment process from Eventbrite events.

  1. Mideast

Everything is pretty much status quo right now, no holiday party planned, discussion on virtual training sessions being considered and they are looking for training session suggestions.

  1. Midwest

They are still working on the Public Works Monument, but it probably will not have traction until after the election since they are trying to use state land.  The Public Works Academy is moving forward with the expansion plans.  The Snow Plow Roadeo was held with 18 teams registered and the City of Wyoming was the top team and the top individual winner was from the City of Grand Rapids.  They are looking at December 16th as a possible date for the holiday party.

  1. Northern

No report.

  1. Southwest

There is not much going on.  There was a virtual MML update on October 10th with John Lamaccia.  They have sent out the branch award nominations.  They are currently looking for a location for December 9th to host their Christmas luncheon.

  1. Reports/Discussion

Thompson asked the branches how they are handling elections and to make sure they have a plan.  When and if the branch change officers to ensure that it is forwarded to Tracy.

  1. Naming of Chapter Golf Outing

The 1st Chapter Golf Outing was held in August and there was discussion on what this annual golf outing should be named.  There was discussion on honoring Tom Trice and all his hard work for APWA, both National and the chapter.  It was moved by Rohraff and seconded by Bohlen to name the annual chapter golf outing, “TOM TRICE ANNUAL STATE GOLF AND SCHOLARSHIP OUTING”.  All were in favor.  The discussion on how to raise funds and recipient criteria will be held later.

  1. Michigan Chapter and Branch Executive Retreat

Thompson discussed the need for this retreat, with the format being Lunch, Dinner and Breakfast the next day.  The discussion will involve succession planning and future plans and Thompson feel that in person interaction is essential.  It was moved by Belair and seconded by Hummel to move forward with planning the Michigan Chapter and Branch Executive Retreat with approximately 35 participants and a $8,000 budget.  All were in favor.

  1. GLX – what that looks like for 2021

There was discussion on the need to start planning just in case it can be held in person at the Grand Traverse Resort.  The committee needs to be formed; Matt Anderson, Bill Bohlen, Ander Keller, Bob Belair and John Thompson volunteered.  Brandy and Jen will organize the Welcome Event and the non-golf event.  The need to keep the membership engaged is priority.

  1. Snow Conference – Cancelled for 2021 (do we want to host 2025 or 2026?)

National APWA cancelled the 2021 Snow Conference in Grand Rapids, so we have been asked if we wish to host 2025 or 2026.  In 2026 Grand Rapids hotels are booked with another conference and the other dates conflict with GLX.  We have time to think and answer later.

  1. Wisconsin Chapter Virtual Conference invite

If you would like to participate there is a $50 registration fee, maybe the invitation should be sent out to the membership.

  1. Communications/Social Media

The Great Lakes Reporter’s next issue is pretty full, and we may need to push come articles to the 1st issue.  Taylor discussed the 2021 Sponsorship form and suggested some updates/changes we need to make.  Separating GLX and advertising, with a concentration on advertising.

  1. Membership, Marketing and Outreach

They are trying to meek every 4 – 5 weeks.  There will be a YP virtual beer/wine tasting event planned.  Jen participated in the Membership Townhall and reported that Michigan is doing so much more with the membership compared to other chapters.  Some other chapters have thrown in the towel.

  1. Road Scholar/Education

The Education committee has networked with Farmington Hills since they have a ton of videos on their processes.  Links and guidebooks were created so training could be done virtually.  After signing up, the links were sent to registrants with an additional link to Ltap training.  There were approximately 30 people registered for this training.
